This has been a great season for the Sioux City Squirt Green Team. They began the season with wins over Okoboji Blizzard, Windom and Worthington to win the Worthington Tourney in the Squirt B division. In December, January and February they played in Midwest House League. The Green Team had 5 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. Three of the losses and the tie were to the top tier teams in the Select Division. It was unfortunate the boys lost the first game in finals which only allowed for a fifth place finish. The boys showed a lot of character by coming back to win the two remaining games after their disappointment in order to cap off the 5th place finish.
In January, the team received 2nd place in the Squirt A tourney in Sioux Center, Iowa. The next weekend they took 3rd place in the Sioux City Shootout. In February, they played tough competition in a Squirt B tourney in Willmar, Minnesota. The Green Team boys finished off the season with a great showing and championship at the Mason City Winterfest Tourney. They beat Okoboji (7-0), Mason City (8-2) and Austin (9-0) for the Squirt B championship.
This team of boys has been a pleasure to watch this season. They have worked hard and shown a lot heart and determination in playing tough competition. Often times, the competition was bigger and older than these boys. The team work they showed during the final tourney of the season was an example of what these boys have learned. This is the perfect example of a team. The smile on the boy’s faces, great relationships/friendships and memories throughout the season is what makes this hockey team special.
Special thanks to the wonderful coaches. You have made this season special and taught these boys not only about hockey but the importance of discipline, respect, working hard and team work.
I wanted to have one last Green Machine Award. Since we have not done one for awhile, there are a few people who need acknowledged. First, a green machine award must be given to Jennifer Burge. Jennifer was essential in fund raising and making our squirt tournament and hosting MWL weekend a big success. She is organized and extremely dedicated to our team. Thanks so much for all your effort and hard work. The other Green Machine Award goes to Tony and Karrie Hollingshead. The Hollingsheads were always willing to volunteer for the clock, penalty box or any other job. They embody the meaning of team work. They will be greatly missed from our hockey experiences next year. However, they will ALWAYS be a part of our family.
I could have given a Green Machine award to each and every member of our Green Team Family. You have all made my job as a coordinator VERY easy. It has been my pleasure to represent such a wonderful group of parents, players and coaches. I am truly blessed to have had this experience. Thanks for all your help throughout this past season.
