Past SYHA and Sioux City Metro player and current referee Chad Stewart, has been assigned his first Junior A games as member of the 2011-12 USA Hockey Officials Development Program (ODP).
Chad was added to the ODP staff two seasons ago after attending the USA Hockey District Referee camp in Fon du Loc, Wisconsin. This 3-day camp presented by USA Hockey instructors focused on the finer points of officiating also offered an opportunity to be scouted by many junior league referee supervisors.
Chad works a full schedule of MHSHL and NCAA D-3 college games, and in 2010 he was selected to work both the NCCHA Conference Championships and ACHA D-3 Semi-finals championship series. That same year Chad was selected the MHSHL All-Star Game referee and also worked the Junior Varsity Championship game.
He is a native of Sioux City and started playing SYHA at the Mites level. He was a member of the Metros for three seasons and finished his high school career playing in the AAA Midget Elite League. After that, Chad spent several season playing in the USHL and NAHL before returning to Sioux City where he began coaching and officiating.
This season will be Chads 14th as USA Hockey official. He will work his first games on the road in Topeka (KS) as the Roadrunner take on the Springfield (MO) Jr. Bulls. Joining Chad for his first games will be long time ODP official and local Sioux City player Paul Kosovich where he will serve as head referee.
Paul spent 12 seasons as a SYHA & Metros Player and 15th season as a USAH Official. He is in his seventh full season as a USA Hockey ODP member where he sees the bulk of his games at the Junior A (NAHL), Tier 1 (USHL) and Semi-Pro (SPHL) levels.
Come out and support your Sioux City Metros as they take on the Waterloo Warriors this Saturday October 29th at 3:15 for JV and 5:00 for Varsity.
